Vitamin Angels Response to Violence in Haiti
Since 2008, Vitamin Angels has delivered evidence-based nutrition interventions to underserved women and children in Haiti. We are troubled by the ongoing conflict in and around Port-au-Prince and deeply concerned about the devasting impact on the people of Haiti. The violence has not only resulted in thousands of families being displaced to seek safety, but it has also exasperated Haiti’s hunger crisis, especially for the most vulnerable populations – pregnant women, infants, and young children.
Today, nearly 5 million Haitians (almost half the population) are experiencing levels of acute food insecurity. 1.64 million people are classified as ‘class 4,’ which is considered an emergency level of food insecurity. The current armed gang violence, high cost of food, low food production due to low precipitation, and limited humanitarian aid has only increased the devastating impact for millions across the country. The need for nutrition interventions in Haiti has never been greater than right now.
Despite the unstable and dangerous conditions, Vitamin Angels is building on our long-standing relationships with the Ministry of Health and Population (MSPP) and our partners on the ground to continue supporting nutrition interventions to the degree it is safe to do so. We also recognize the essential role of other local and international NGOs who are engaged directly in emergency response and protection in Haiti. We believe a collaborative approach is key to addressing a crisis and stand together with all organizations working to support the people of Haiti during this difficult time.
