Santa Barbara, CA, USA – Vitamin Angels, a global charity connecting at-risk pregnant women and children to essential vitamins and minerals, today announced the appointment of Dr. Elizabeth Kimani-Murage to its board of directors.
A public health specialist and researcher based in Kenya, Dr. Kimani-Murage has focused much of her work on finding solutions to childhood nutrition problems in poor, urban settings throughout Africa.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Kimani-Murage join Vitamin Angels,” said Howard B. Schiffer, president and founder of Vitamin Angels. “Her expertise is bringing important program insight to our board of directors and we know she will be a strong advocate for the babies, children and women we are serving!”
Dr. Kimani-Murage serves as head of the Maternal and Child Wellbeing Unit at the African Population and Health Research Center. A strong advocate of optimal nutrition for child development, she leads projects evaluating community- and workplace-based interventions designed to promote optimal feeding practices for infants and young children. She also holds a Wellcome Trust international engagement fellowship to engage low-income Kenyans on their constitutional right to food.
“I am so excited about joining Vitamin Angels’ board of directors,” Dr. Kimani-Murage said. “It gives me a great opportunity to direct what I am so passionate about – promoting human dignity of poor and vulnerable populations around the world.”
Prior to earning her doctorate in public health from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, Dr. Kimani-Murage received her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Moi University in Kenya. She has authored many research papers on the impacts of interventions on breastfeeding and optimal nutrition practices for young children.
