Vitamin Angels Establishes Transforming Lives Through Nutrition as Founding Partner
In a continued effort to improve maternal and child nutrition around the world, Vitamin Angels has partnered to establish Transforming Lives Through Nutrition, a consortium of public health organizations working together to address malnutrition globally. Funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ humanitarian service division, the founding partners include Vitamin Angels, Helen Keller Intl, and iDE. Together, the partners are amplifying their collective impact by delivering proven nutrition interventions to reach more underserved pregnant women, infants, and young children around the world.
“This is an incredible opportunity to use the power of strategic collaboration to maximize our global impact,” said Howard Schiffer, Founder & President of Vitamin Angels. “Together we are working alongside national governments, implementing partners, and global stakeholders to help create lasting change and improve the lives of millions of underserved women and children globally. It’s clear that our work together will have a much larger impact than would be possible individually.”
Currently, 2.8 billion people in the world cannot afford a healthy diet, which can result in malnutrition and have devastating impacts. The most vulnerable populations—pregnant women, infants, and young children—are disproportionately impacted. Without adequate nutrition, they are at a higher risk of maternal and child mortality, increased susceptibility to diseases, stunting, wasting, and impaired physical and cognitive development. Evidence-based nutrition and food system interventions are critical to addressing this global challenge.
Transforming Lives Through Nutrition is working in 12 countries across Asia and Africa: Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. The partners are teaming up to deliver a comprehensive package of maternal and young child interventions, including multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) for pregnant women, vitamin A supplementation and deworming (VAS+D) for children under 5, breastfeeding promotion, infant and young child feeding promotion, acute malnutrition screening and treatment, agricultural production, and strengthening supply chain & small business enterprises, and water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH) interventions. The interventions delivered are tailored to the needs of the individual countries and leverage the existing programming and expertise of each of the implementing organizations to create more long-lasting and comprehensive support.
As a founding partner of Transforming Lives Through Nutrition, this work aligns with Vitamin Angels’ strategic plan to expand its portfolio of nutrition programs around the world and double its impact to reach 140 million underserved women and children annually by 2033.
