Making a Meaningful Impact in Honduras

Vitamin Angels partners with Central American Medical Outreach, Inc. (CAMO) and Fundación CAMO Honduras to provide deworming treatment to children under five across Honduras. Together, the organizations are working to strengthen nutrition access and build long-term health capacity in one of Central America’s most underserved regions.

Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), or parasitic worm infections caused by contact with contaminated soil, block the absorption of critical nutrients and are endemic in Honduras, where gaps in access to clean water, safe sanitation, and healthy hygiene practices remain significant barriers to health.

The Challenge

Almost 645,000 preschool-aged children in Honduras are at risk of STH infection, according to the World Health Organization.1

Central American Medical Outreach’s Approach: Education and Intervention

To reach nutritionally vulnerable children in Honduras, Vitamin Angels collaborates with Central American Medical Outreach (CAMO) , a humanitarian organization bringing life-saving medical services, education, and community development to Central America. A team of nurses, social workers, and community partners prioritizes health education, particularly in rural communities where access to care is severely limited.

Bianca Ramírez, Nutritionist of Fundación CAMO in Santa Rosa de Copán, describes the organization’s approach:

Sometimes these families may have resources available, but if they do not know the usefulness, preparation, and importance of proper nutrition, our work is wasted. That is why our main objective is helping them acquire knowledge related to their health and nutrition.

-Bianca Ramirez, Nutritionist of Fundación CAMO

Two Decades of Impact: The Worm Project

Since 2003, The Worm Project has donated more than 136 million cumulative doses of albendazole, enabling Vitamin Angels to reach over 136 million children around the world with life-saving deworming treatment. In 2025 alone, The Worm Project donated over 12 million doses, supporting deworming programs in 44 countries. The Worm Project’s commitment through Vitamin Angels’ programs is a powerful example of how partnership can amplify community-led nutrition work at scale.

Looking Ahead

Efforts in Honduras demonstrate what’s possible when education, local expertise, and evidence-based nutrition interventions work together. By supporting CAMO’s capacity strengthening work and providing access to proven products and services, Vitamin Angels is helping create conditions where families can take action for their own health.

With sustained support and community investment, progress in Honduras can continue to grow, reaching more children, more pregnant women, and more families across the region.
